Choosing A Wedding Photographer

July 16, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

At Occasion Photos we pride ourselves on providing quality, affordable wedding photography. It is so important when choosing a wedding photographer to choose one who is right for you and your wedding. Here are five areas you should consider before making that choice.

EXPERIENCE

Wedding photographers have only one chance to get it right, so experience is very important. Who will be shooting your wedding? Did they take the photos you’re looking at? How many weddings have they personally shot? Do they have back-up gear in case things go wrong? Check out their work in person or online, including testimonials from previous clients. As the only photographer at Occasion Photos, I have been photographing weddings for 20 years. I currently photograph around 25 weddings a year. You can read testimonials here and see a video of me at work here.

QUALITY

Experience is one thing, quality is another. When choosing a wedding photographer take time to assess their photography. Ask to see an entire wedding shoot, not just a few carefully chosen images. Are the images in focus, properly exposed and with plenty of detail? How do the people look, especially the bride and groom? Is the lighting well balanced? How well do they cope with challenges like bright sunshine or rain? I always carry back up equipment and am very happy to show complete wedding shoots to potential clients. We upload our latest work to the website as soon as possible. You can see our gallery of wedding shots here.

STYLE

Think about the style of photography you like – whether that’s casual, formal, documentary, glamour, journalistic or a mix. Your album will be a treasure for generations, so it’s good to think about how people may think about it in times to come! Look for a photographer whose work you really love and whose style reflects your own. I can shoot in a variety of styles to meet your needs and I find clients generally like a mix of formal, documentary, colour and black and white.

PERSONALITY

You’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else – other than your spouse of course! Quality, style and experience are very important, but so is personality. Whether they’re fun, polite or unobtrusive, you do need to be able to get along pleasantly on the day! At Occasion Photos I am very happy to meet clients before the big day and often visit the venue with the bride and groom to plan some photos in advance. If we are unable to arrange a date to meet, there is always the ‘Day in the Life‘ video for you to watch, which shows me at work.

PRICE

As always, choosing a wedding photographer, you get what you pay for, but a professional photographer with the right experience, style and personality is well worth the investment. It’s also important to find out exactly what’s included in the price. Does the price include an album? If so, of what type and quality? Will you receive the image files? If so will they be high resolution, edited and colour corrected? At Occasion Photos, all our packages include a printed photobook album and the top end packages include all your photos in high resolution on a DVD, fully edited and colour corrected.

I do hope this article has given you some idea what you should be looking for when choosing a wedding photographer. I am, of course, very keen that you choose Occasion Photos and I truly believe we can live up to and exceed your expectations.
